English 7 Assignments

Any students who did not finish their group presentations based on the readings from Common Lit will need to finish before Monday's class.  Required elements can be found on Google Classroom.

Any student who was absent needs to access the posttest through Google Classroom and complete the posttest.  

Also, after the posttest, choose 1 of the 3 articles from CommonLit and complete the assignment (also on Google Classroom).

Students were assigned to read either "Theseus and the Minotaur" or "The Underground Railroad" (both found at www.commonlit.org).  They need to answer the questions on Common Lit, and then answer the discussion questions found on Google Classroom.  Any student who was absent needs to use "The Underground Railroad" piece for the assignment.  All students need to be prepared to teach their peers about their article in class on Monday.

Completed in Class - Complete graphic organizer for the first two works.  Then, complete the "Pairing Questions" sheet.

Begin by going to Google Classroom for the Writing Prompt about acting heroically.  Spend about 10 minutes on your writing, and submit it through Google Classroom.

Then, you will need to go to www.commonlit.org.

Log in using Google.  When you are prompted to change your password, use your lunch number.

Select the "My Assignments" tab.  Read the selection about Jackie Robinson and answer the questions.

Finally, go to Google Classroom to find the discussion questions for tomorrow.  Be prepared to answer every question.  I will randomly pick discussion leaders.

Here is the message I sent out on Skyward concerning the assignment that was due on 27 April, as well as where to find a copy of the field trip permission slip.  I would like to have permission slips signed and returned by Tuesday, 1 May.

Students should be creating the rough draft of their historical fiction story.  

If you were not in class on April 16^th, this is what you need to do:

Read the historical fiction project explanation on Google Classroom.

Create a Google document named your last name Historical Fiction. (EX. Paradies Historical Fiction)  Put the appropriate MLA heading on the first page.

Divide a piece of paper into quadrants. In each quadrant, write a year or event about which you would like to know more.  Your years and events must fall within our time frame of 1858 and 2000.

Once you have your time or event, then write 3 questions that you would like to answer about these times. Remember that questions begin with capital letters and end with question marks.

Finally, complete the Google Form about the State Reading Assessment.

The information for the poetry assignment can be found on Google Classroom.  Students are working toward creating a poem that is due on Friday, April 13th.

A third set of 4 vocabulary collectors is due on the 29th.  Remember that these are 4 new words that you have not handed in yet. 

Also, remember that the Jayhawker final project is due on Monday, April 2.

Here is the information about the final project for Jayhawker.  It was distributed today during class.  

Did you remember to submit your journal entry via Google Classroom today?  If not, please do so by Monday.

 

You have 4 vocabulary collectors due on Monday.  Remember that there are examples of the different types of collectors on Google Classroom.

Complete a vocabulary collector for 3 different words from your vocabulary list.  Examples of the vocabulary collectors can be found on Google Classroom.  

 

Create a Subject-Verb Agreement quiz using Google Forms.  An example of a quiz as well as the assignment submission spot can be found on Google Classroom.

Jayhawker Journal Entry #1: 

 

The student will write two paragraphs (a minimum of 5 sentences each) as a journal entry from the point of view of a Kansan who has had their home burned down by the Bushwhackers.

 

It should be submitted through Google Classroom and use Times New Roman 12 pt font.

You are the editor of a newspaper.  You may be from the North, the South, or one of the territories.

You must write an editorial about John Brown’s death.

The title of your editorial is “John Brown – Martyr or Madman?”

Use evidence from the novel to support your point of view.

 

Your editorial must be ½ - 1 page long.

Font – Times New Roman

Size – 12

Remember to include your heading in the upper left hand corner.

Due Tuesday, February 20^th.

 

 

All students should have read through the end of chapter 4 in the novel Jayhawker by the end of class today.  I'm attaching the study guides for chapters 3 & 4 for any students who have missed the class discussions.  Also, remember that a hard copy of the editorial assignment is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

 

How do the different characters feel about John Brown?  Write a paragraph from the point of view of each of the following characters explaining how he/she feels about John Brown:

Read the excerpt from Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham City Jail".  Then answer the 8 questions.

Today's activity will need to be completed in class due to the need for the QR codes attached to the information.  Any student who was absent will need to make arrangements to complete the activity upon return.

The written portion of the collaborative research/writing project needs to be finished at the beginning of class on the 26th.  We will attach the papers to QR codes at that time.  Each group needs to submit only one paper for the group.

The Week 6 DOL Quiz is Tuesday, January 23rd.  Remember that your completed DOL practice sheet is worth an extra percentage point on the quiz.

Each student is responsible for 5 notecards about his/her group research topic.  The cards should be submitted via Google Classroom by the beginning of class on Monday, Jan. 22.  The notecard template can be found on Google Classroom. 

Correct DOL sentences "Karen 1 & 2".

Read pages 634 – 637 in the literature book.  Be prepared to answer p. 644 - # 1, 2, 6.  Also, pay attention to the colored letter points in the story.  We will use them for tomorrow's discussion.

Any student who was present in class needs to finish his/her WJ (Writing Journal) entry based on his/her 2nd quarter goals by responding to the following questions:

• Did you accomplish your goal for 2^nd quarter?
• What did you do/not do to accomplish the goal?
• What do you want to accomplish in English during 3^rd quarter?
• What is your plan to reach it?

Since Skyward is down, I am using this website for a reminder that we are having a DOL quiz tomorrow (Friday) and a pronoun test on Tuesday.

Use page 435 in the Writer's Choice book to complete the attached notes.  

Use the red Writer's Choice book and complete page 444, Review Exercise 2, # 1 - 10.  Follow the instructions in the book.  Remember, this is the grammar book, not the literature book.

Just a quick reminder that the book report is due Friday, Dec. 1.  Each student will need to have a hard copy of his or her report to hand in at the beginning of class.

Finish completing the note sheet from yesterday (attached).  This information can be found on page 429 of your red Writer's Choice book.  Then, complete the attached "Pronoun Practice" sheet.  Also, correct DOL sentences Irene 1 & 2.  Remember that we are taking the STAR Reading Assessment tomorrow and that the book report is due on Friday.

Correct DOL sentences Grace 1 & 2.

Read and complete the activity on sentence fragments (attached).

Correct F1 and F2 on the attached DOL sheet.

Finish correcting the run-on sentences from the note sheet from last week.  Each sentence should be corrected using each of the methods shown on the note sheet.

Anyone who was absent needs to read the information about the upcoming book report.

Here is the English class update that I sent out in Skyward.

Students should continue working on their projects based on A Wrinkle in Time.  Once finished with the project, each student should continue reading and taking notes about his/her book report book.  Book report information will be distributed once Wrinkle projects are finished.

The final project for A Wrinkle in Time is due Wednesday, November 15th, at the beginning of class.

 

Thursday, November 16th, is the DOL quiz.

Here is the update that I sent out through Skyward.

Today we worked in class on our final projects for A Wrinkle in Time.  If you were absent, try to complete a little work so that you are not too far behind tomorrow when we work.  

 

The final project will be due on Wednesday, November 15th.

Continue reading your book report book.  Remember to take notes on what you read and be sure to include the page number with each note.

 

Choose which final project you wish to complete.  (List attached.) Bring any necessary supplies to class on Wednesday and Thursday to work on your project.

Each student should spend some time this weekend reading the book he/she chose for the book report.  Remember to take notes and to include the page numbers where the information was found.

 

The book must be a biography or autobiography that is a minimum of 75 pages long.  

Read and annotate the final chapter of the novel.

 

If you haven't selected a book for the book report, you need to do so. Make sure the book meets the following requirements:

•      Biography or autobiography
•      Minimum of 75 pages (not mainly pictures)
•      I (Miss Paradies) must approve your book.

 

 When you begin reading your book, take notes about what you read.  Make sure that you record the page number for each fact you record.

 Ex.  “Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated 44 world-famous books for children … and their lucky parents.” p. 25

 

Format and due date will be discussed in the near future.

 

Read and annotate chapter 11 by Wednesday.

 

 

Meet in the LMC Tuesday.  This is our lesson day, so we will be there for the full period.

Complete the worksheet for chapters 8 & 9 (attached).

Complete worksheet 17 "Evaluating What You Read".

Finish reading chapter 3 (we began in class).  Then write a short (1/2 page -1 page) summary of the chapter.

Complete the "Classifying Word Groups" worksheet.  The boys should complete the odd numbers and the girls should complete the even numbers. 

Work on your collaborative group scientific advancements project.  The final project is due September 21st.

Read chapter 2 of A Wrinkle in Time.  

Remember that the scientific advancements Google Slides presentation is due tomorrow (Thursday) at the beginning of class.

Finish reading chapter 1 of A Wrinkle in Time.  Annotate as you read.

Any students who missed class will need to spend time researching their specific topics for the inventions research activity.  We will be working on the next stage of the project on Friday.

 Any students who were absent and did not request the assignment in advance will need to check with me for the reading assignment when we return to school next week.  

 

For those who were present in class, the assignment is as follows - 

 

Imagine that you were one of the people fooled by the broadcast.  Write a letter to the head of the network expressing your feelings.  This assignment it due Wednesday.

 

 

From page 905 in the literature books,  answer questions 3 & 7.  You must write or type your answers in the form of complete sentences.

Correct DOL sentences D 1 & 2.  

Read the explanation about "chronological order" on page 895.  Then,  read pages 902 – 905.  Be prepared to answer questions #1, 2, 4, 5, 6.  Also, since this is a short reading assignment, take some time to study the artwork on pages 902 and 903. 

 

Read pages 896 – 901 from the literature book.  Read questions #1, 2, 3, 5.  Be prepared to discuss them tomorrow.  You do not have to write the answers, but you may if it helps you with the discussion.

 

 Those students who were absent today will need to take the English Class Pretest (https://goo.gl/forms/f5EYWIAiJ5q5JrwN2).  Also, students need to correct DOL sentences B 1 & 2 and C 1& 2.

 

All students should review the reading selection - "Great White Sharks" (pgs. 885 - 891).

 Read "Great White Sharks" in the literature book (pages 885 - 891).  Be prepared to discuss the story in class on Thursday.

 In honor of the solar eclipse, we are writing eclipse stories.  The attached information explains the assignment which is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.
