English 7- Block 1 (Period 3) Assignments

Any student who missed class will need to complete the attached close read document that was completed in class.

Read "from The Story of the Triangle Factory Fire" (pgs 275 - 277).  Review "from Flesh & Blood So Cheap" in preparation for Monday's discussion.  Any student who was absent should also watch the History Channel video attached to page 265 of the online text.

Read "from Flesh & Blood So Cheap" (pgs. 265 - 273).  This reading selection is a historical piece about an actual event.

Any student who was not present in class today needs to read "Prayer to the Pacific" (Close Reader pgs. 58 - 59) and answer questions 3 & 4.

Any students who were not in class need to read pages 55 - 59 in the Close Reader.  Then, follow the instructions for question 1 on page 56.  For pages 58 - 59, think about the form of the poem and why the poet chose to use the word placement and capitalization that she did.

Use the glossary in your Collections book to define the following terms:

Read "Ode to enchanted light" (pgs. 169 - 170).  Complete "Analyzing the Text" (pg. 171).

Review "The Hidden Southwest:  The Arch Hunters" in order to continue our discussion on Monday.  Remember to study for the affix quiz in Block 2 on either Monday or Tuesday.

Read "The Hidden Southwest:  The Arch Hunters" (pgs. 51 - 54 in the Close Reader).  Circle any words you don't know.  Write any questions or Aha Moments in the margin.  Then answer questions 1, 2, 3, 5, & 6.

Review "Big Rocks' Balancing Acts" and the notes from the presentations about patterns of organization for a quiz tomorrow (Wednesday).  The quiz will include reading comprehension, vocabulary, and information taken from the group presentations.

With a partner, create a Google Slides presentation about your assigned Greek or Latin affix.  the 2 slide presentation (title slide does not count) must contain the following:

Any student who is absent on January 23rd will be exempt from creating this assignment.

 

Presentations will be made to the class on Tuesday, January 28th.

Good Afternoon.  Attached is my latest English class update that was sent out in Skyward today.

Read "Big Rocks' Balancing Acts" which can be found in the Collections book on pages 157 - 164.  The students who were present in class have been assigned to a group to watch a Level Up Tutorial about patterns of organization.  Each group will present a lesson to the class about the information.  

Read "Allied with Green" (pgs. 148 - 151).  

Complete the Elements of Poetry crossword puzzle that was handed out in class.  Students may review the Level-Up Tutorial - "Elements of Poetry" if needed.

Students need to watch the Level Up Tutorial - "Elements of Poetry".

Use the answers on Google Classroom to complete the Shakespeare packet from yesterday.

Any student who was not in class on Friday, December 13, will need to read "from Polar Dream" in the Close Reader (pgs. 45 - 50).  Then answer questions 3, 4, 5 & 6.

There will be a quiz tomorrow over the reading selection "from Mississippi Solo".  The quiz will have 6 comprehension questions and 4 vocabulary questions.  The vocabulary terms and definitions are in the textbook.  The comprehension questions were discussed as part of today's class discussion.

Students completed our final formative assessment that we will take before Winter Break.  Any student who was absent will need to make arrangements to finish the assessment upon his/her return.  Then students completed the attached Guided Reading about the reading assignment from yesterday.

Students who were in class today do not need to complete this assignment as it was done during our class discussion.  

 

For those students who were absent, read "Your World" (p. 213).  Then answer the 4 questions in the "Analyzing the Text" section on page 214.  You may either write your answers by hand or type them on the computer.  Either way, turn in your answers to Ms. Paradies when you return to school.

Watch (or finish watching) the Level-up Tutorial about "Imagery".  The tutorial can be found on the Collections site by going to the "Student Resources" icon.  Next choose "Level-up Tutorials".  Choose "Analyzing Literature" and finally "Imagery".

Any student who was absent needs to watch the Level-up Tutorial about Tone.  The Level-up Tutorials are found on the Collections site under the "Student Resources" tab.

Students took the STAR Reading Assessment in class today.  Mrs. Heronema will schedule any student who was absent to take the missed assessment.

Complete the "Practice and Apply" section on pages 200 and 212.

We completed our first read of the selection entitled "Stinging Tentacles Offer Hint of Oceans' Decline" (pages 67 - 74).  Students who were absent should complete the first read, circling unfamiliar words and writing questions in the margins.  Also complete the first two bullets of question 1 (pg. 67).  We will continue with our discussion of the piece tomorrow in class.

Based on your assigned group in class, answer the appropriate question from page 198 in the Collections text.

Read "Living in the Dark", pages 201 - 208.  This selection is in the Collections textbook.  Remember that the book is online if you forgot your book at school.

Read pg. 192.  Write notes in the part 2 of your ELA  Notebook. 

Complete “Practice and Apply”.  You may just write the words that are not capitalized but should be.  This should be on a separate sheet of paper that you can hand in.

Read 63 - 66 in the Close Reader.  Circle any words that you do not know.  Write any questions you have in the margins.

Also, if you have not submitted your Top 5 List with your research, you need to do that in Google Classroom.

The homework is to define the bold faced words on page 189 of your Collections book.  There are 8 of them.  You may use the context on the page or the glossary that begins on page R64.

If you were absent, listen to President Kennedy's speech (pgs. 185 - 188).  Prepare for the "Collaborative Discussion" at the bottom of page 188.

Most of today's assignment was completed in class in a collaborative group.  However, question 3 from the attached worksheet should be completed individually in submitted on Google Classroom.  The documents used for the activity can be found on GC also.  

 

Any student who was absent should complete the worksheet using the attached document.

Copy the "Academic Vocabulary" terms and definitions from page 184.  Put them in the 3rd section of your English class notebook.  There will be a quiz over them on Wednesday.

 

Read pages 185 - 188 in your Collections book.  I want you to read and not listen to the audio book.  Trust me, I have my reasons.

Use the Choice Board (attached) to select a final project for Collection 1.  Then, use the Google Form on Google Classroom to convey your choice to Ms. Paradies.

Tuesday - A hard copy of your project is due at the beginning of class.

Read page 52 and complete the "Practice and Apply" section.

Answer questions 2, 3, 4, 5 for the story "Arachne" (Close Reader pgs. 17 - 22).

Reread "Arachne" (Close Reader pgs. 17 - 22).  Complete pg. 17, #1.

Read pages 39 - 41, "Icarus's Flight".  then answer the following questions from page 42 - #2, 3, 4, 5, 6.  Write your answers using complete sentences and correct capitalization, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Read "The Flight of Icarus" (pgs. 31 - 35).  There will be a quiz tomorrow over the story and the vocabulary (in the margins in bold print).

Here is the update that I sent in Skyward in case you did not receive it.

Review the stages of plot found on page 15.  Read page 17, "Vocabulary Strategy:  Latin Roots".  Complete the "Practice and Apply" section for the "Vocabulary Strategy" section.  Remember that you may use the online book if your textbook is at school.

For class on Tuesday, reread "Rogue Wave".  Make notes in part 2 of your ELA (English) notebook about anything that you find interesting or that jumps out at you.  Use your online book to listen to the "Close Read" on page 7.
