A New Semester - A Fresh Start

Welcome back! We are so happy to have our students back in the building with us. The second semester offers a fresh start to our students (and adults, too). Despite the unpredictability of this school year, our focus remains on improvement and progress, not perfection.
My resolution is to improve my weekly communication. If you have questions about anything we are doing in the classroom, feel free to contact me at [email protected]

End of the Quarter

We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter! I know, I cannot believe it either. All missing work MUST be turned in by Wednesday, October 21. Any late work submitted after that date will not be accepted.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be October 29 from 3:15 - 7:00PM and October 30 from 8:00AM - 12NOON. Due to the restrictions from our current situation, each Stable Group will only be assigned ONE teacher to meet with. Please check your family access on Skyward to sign up for a conference time. Don't forget to email the Stable Group teacher if you prefer to meet via Zoom for your scheduled conference. Unless otherwise stated, we will assume you will be meeting with us in person.

Progress Reports and Early Release!

Parents and Students,

This week Progress Reports will be published through Skyward. If you do not already have access to Skyward, please contact our front office staff (at 913-651-7371).
This Friday, October 2, 2020 is an early release. Students will be dismissed at 1:00 PM.

Digital Choice Boards

Phew! That first week flew by! It has been a steep learning curve with Block 2. I appreciate the students' patience as we work out what this new class will include. We've found it is a perfect opportunity for socio-emotional learning (i.e. setting goals and learning our personality types) as well as taking a moment to decompress. I've enjoyed sharing a "mindful minute" with the students and since our class period directly follows lunch, it helps on those days when we've all had a few too many carbs!
This week we will begin using the Digital Choice Boards. The Must Do's for the first few weeks will be practice for Math and Reading standards. Students should complete the TWO Must Do's and at least TWO Can Do's by the end of the week.

We made it to Week 2!

Hello parents and students,
We made it to Week 2! I have been pleasantly surprised at the amazing insights of all my students. We have been able to dive right into the first unit with Reading/Collections. The first unit is "Culture and Belonging" and we will be exploring what culture is and what it means for our human experience.
The first story in this Collection is "My Favorite Chaperone" (which can be found on pages 3-29).
We will also begin the Article of the Week assignment. In an effort to broaden student's points of view and study more nonfiction, we will be exploring articles from reputable sources and responding to them. This first week the focus skill is summarizing. Students should read and summarize the article available on the Google Classroom. This assignment will be due FRIDAY, September 18.

Please email me with any questions you may have: [email protected]

I will begin inputting grades at the end of this week. Have a great week!
