English 7 Assignments

Any student who was not in class today needs to read pgs. 228 - 236 from the literature book.  Since students handed in their books last week, the students who missed class will need to use their online book to complete the reading.

 

The information about the historical fiction research project was distributed and discussed today in class.  The final project is due on May 9th.  Please consult the attached documents for more information.

 

Also, the poetry presentations are due this coming Monday (April 24th).  Most students are working with a partner or in a small group.  Oral presentations will be given in class.  The project rubric can be found in our Google Classroom.

Here is the update for this week.  Please remember that a hard copy of the final copy of the historical fiction story is due on Tuesday.  The requirements can be reviewed on this site or on Google Classroom.

Any student who was absent today should use the link on Google Classroom to watch The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and complete a Top Hat graphic organizer to compare and contrast the video with the version we read in the literature book.  The graphic organizer should be handed in on Monday.

Please refer to Google Classroom for the video link and instructions for anyone who was not in class today.  Different classes are at different places in the process.

For any students who missed today's WoD, the topic was - "Who are the monsters on Maple Street?  Support your answer with evidence."

 WoD:  After watching “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins, answer the following questions:

• What do you think the speaker is trying to say in the poem?
• Did the poetry in motion video help you to understand this?
• What examples of figurative language can you find in the poem?

Any students who missed class today need to review the attached notes and PowerPoint presentation.  This information will be important for the upcoming assignment.

Any student who did not complete the poetry assignment in class will need to select 5 poems from the site we used in class and complete the worksheet.  

 

Any student who was absent will need to go to Google Classroom to find the site and worksheet to complete about poetry.  Students may pick any 5 poems from the website to use for the activity.

Now that we have finished reading Jayhawker, it's time for a final writing assignment about the novel.  The attached document explains the assignment.  The completed essay should be submitted to Miss Vouk ([email protected]) no later than Friday.

This really isn't a homework assignment.  I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew I had posted my recent parent e-mail.

 

Miss Paradies

Write an editorial about John Brown's execution.  The editorial must have a minimum of 3 arguments supporting your opinion.  Refer to the attached documents for more information.  The editorial is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

Read the article entitled "Excerpt for Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from the Birmingham City Jail" and answer the 10 questions about it.  (document attached)

The completed newspapers should be finished by the beginning of class on Tuesday.  Any students who were absent on Monday need to check with their writing group members about where to insert their articles.

Students need to work on their independent articles for their group newspaper.  Articles should be ready for peer proofreading and editing at the beginning of class on Monday.  

Please remember that we will be taking the STAR Reading Assessment tomorrow in class.  Be sure to bring your book report book with you.

Complete worksheet 6/7.  Any students who were absent on January 12th will need to request the worksheet upon his/her return to school.

Here is the information about the book for the upcoming book report.  We discussed this in class on Monday and went to the LMC to check out books yesterday.  More information will be forthcoming about the format.

Study the notes on capitalization that were taken in class Thursday and Friday.

Here is an update on what is happening in English 7 this week.

Writer's Choice book - page 480, Ex. 1, # 1 - 10

Follow the instructions in the book.

This assignment is from the red Writer's Choice book that the students received last week (or Monday for those who were absent).  The assignment is to complete pg. 432, Exercise 3, #11 - 20.  Do not follow the instructions in the book.  Instead, follow the chart format that we began in class.

3rd Hr. did not get to the assignment today, so they will have it as the homework tomorrow night.  Students in all other classes should complete it tonight.

A number of students did not have the one-page story extension of A Wrinkle in Time that was due today in class.  The story is based on Mrs Whatsit's final words in the novel, "Oh, my darlings, I'm sorry we don't have time to say good-bye to you properly.  You see we have to --".  If Skyward shows the assignment as "missing" with no grade, then it has been handed in.  If Skyward shows the assignment as "missing" with a zero, then it was not handed in to me.  The students were instructed to hand in a hard copy of the story, so placing it in Google Classroom did not meet the requirements.

Go to our Google Classroom and make a copy of the document entitled "Wrinkle - History of the Space Race".  Read the document and be prepared to discuss it Monday in class.

Here is my weekly update that I send out via Skyward.

Students have been given one extra day to correct book reports.  All facts need to have parenthetical citation.  Also, it would benefit students to review the required elements given on the initial explanation sheet.

In addition, students need to finish reading "The Last Dog" (pgs. 44 - 57).

Continue working on the nonfiction book report that is due on Monday.

Here is the English class update that was sent out via Skyward.

Based on their assigned group, the students should read either  pages 929 - 934 or 937 - 941.  Although the students do not need to write the answers to the "After Reading" questions, they should review the questions as they will be the basis for the "fishbowl" class discussion on Wednesday.  Any student who is absent today (Monday) should read and prepare to discuss the first reading selection.

Here is my e-mail update for the week.

Based on the article read in class today ("Mars Attacks!") write a letter to the radio station responsible for the broadcast.  Express your thoughts and feelings about the program.  This assignment may be submitted through Google Classroom on by hand.  

 

Read and annotate pages 885 - 891.  Pay particular attention to author's bias and loaded language.

Complete the Interest Inventory.  This is due tomorrow when we meet in the LMC.

Read pages 873 - 880 in the literature book.  Annotate the article using either the "notes" tool in the online book or actual sticky notes with the take home textbook.  If using the take home textbook, be sure to include the page and paragraph or line number with each note.  This will make it easier to discuss the selection in class.  If needed, the instructions for the online book as well as the activation code can be found on Google Classroom or attached to this message.  The document is entitled  "Online Text Activation".

The instructions for the book report were discussed today in class.  The students have a copy of the instructions on their Google Classroom account.  The report is due September 19th.

Here is my e-mail update for the week.

This time this really is an assignment.  

Students should finish correcting the final 3 sentences on the DOL sheet for this week.  We will go over the corrections in class on Friday.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, we had to postpone today's Insight assessment.  Therefore, there is a homework assignment for tonight.  Students need to finish annotating their copy of "4-year old finds 94-million-year-old fossil of an armored dinosaur".  They received a copy in class.  The document can also be found on their Google Classroom site.

This assignment applies only to 1st period English.  We did not have time to finish our in-class practice in the other classes.

This actually isn't an assignment, it is a copy of the e-mail I just sent through Skyward.

Complete the "Reflection Time" question at the end of the note sheet.  The response only needs to be a paragraph long.

Finish annotating the "Vampires Prey on Panama" article that we began in class today.  I cannot place a copy of the article on the website due to copyright laws.

This is just a reminder that we will meet in the LMC (Library Media Center) for class on Monday.
