Happy Tuesday!!
Today students took their 3rd STAR Adaptive math test!  This test completes our testing requirements for the year!!!
Students have been assigned Module 8 lesson 1, Solving Systems of Equations.  This is an 8th Grade Common Core standard, so all of our friends PCSing out of Kansas will benefit from these lessons greatly (I don't want to create gaps!!!) For those staying in Kansas, this is not an 8th grade Kansas standards... but...this is a HUGE hurdle students often struggle with in Algebra 1.  Please encourage students to do their work and to do it well, as these lessons should increase their success next year in Algebra!  It's a Win-Win academically, but it is the end of the year... students will have time in class to do the work if they choose to use their time wisely on math instead of socializing... We will work systems for the rest of this week, utilizing the Rovers towards the end of the week.

All Math Work is DUE FRIDAY!!!!  May 17th is the last day I will be accepting any math work, whether it be corrections and retakes, missing work, or their current work.  I will update grades over the weekend, pass back papers on Monday and have the students verify their scores.  I will submit grades for Report Cards on Monday, May 20th!!!
Please email if you have any questions or concerns.
I am available Tuesday and Wednesday until 4 for tutoring in room 103.
I hope you have a great week!
Respectfully,
Betina Faught

Final!!!
Happy Wednesday!
Today in class worked on a review for the Math Final which will take place tomorrow!
The test is called the 8th Grade Standards Assessment, it is a district assessment over the 8th grade standards, 40 Questions over two days.
Star Test will be next Tuesday May 14th, which will conclude our testing season!
We will be covering Systems of Linear equations the rest of the week, as it is an 8th grade Common Core standard, but not a Kansas 8th grade standard, and I'd like to give those heading out the best chance at success next year.  Those staying, it'll be a preview of what they'll need next year!
As always, please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Betina Faught

Happy Monday!!!
It's crazy to think there's only two Monday's left this school year!!!  WOWZERS!
Today in math class we started Module 14, Statistics.
Students should have WB pages 436-438 # 1-12 completed for class on Tuesday.
Tuesday and Wednesday we will review for the 8th Grade Standards test that will be given Thursday.
During our Assembly time, 8th graders participated in a presentation by Mr. Clark from Mars Wrigley Confectionary, learning about chemical engineering, the process of taking a product from the idea stage to production at a new plant, and all of the processes between.  He discussed packaging requirements, weight to volume conversions, surface area constraints, etc.  Math and Science applied in real life!  Students were also given candy from the Mars Wrigley company.
We also found out some good news regarding the overall State Assessment Scores, more details in the future, but things are looking GREAT at PJHS!!!
I hope you have a great Monday evening,

Happy Friday!
I hope everyone had a great day!  Students worked to complete their Module 5 Post Test Quiz, there were a few students that didn't finish the Quiz in class today, they will have a few minutes at the beginning of class to finish it on Monday.  Mr. Akred covered my classes today,
Students should work on WB pages CC19-20, these pages are in the front materials of the GoMath workbook.  They were intended to be used as a benchmark, however, we took the benchmark online, so these pages are fair game to be used as a study guide!!!
I've attached screen shots of the pages just incase you can't find them.

Yesterday I stated we would be working Module 13 after the Midterm, however, it should have been Module 14.  The Module 14 materials were opened this afternoon, students that are going to be gone the last week of the year should work on these assignments before they leave for Winter break.

Happy Thursday!
Today in class students completed their Module 5 review, those that finished had the opportunity to grade it in class as well.  I will attach a copy of the key for those that did not finish in class.  Please check over their review with them this evening.  WB pages 145 and 146.
I had a substitute today, I needed to take my husband in for a medical procedure.

Students will be taking their Module 5 Quiz Friday 7 Dec. It is an eleven question quiz that aligns very closely to the review assignment.  If students do well on the review, they should do well on the Quiz.  It is an early release Friday, but I trust they will have time to finish in class as it is quite short.

Next week students will take the STAR test on Tuesday and their Midterm Final on Thursday with review days scheduled on Monday and Wednesday.  Friday the 14th will be a day to finish their Midterm and we will start Module 13 which deals with scatter plots and lines of best fit, which works in nicely to what we have been working on for the last two months.  It is a short Module that should fill the last week nicely.  If students are not in school this week they will need to complete the work early in their WB or online at my.hrw.com

Assignment

Good afternoon,
I hope this makes it in time!!!  Wednesday at 5:04, I'm not sure if it will.
Students worked on Lesson 4.3 Graphing Linear Non-proportionate Relationships, starting class with an IXL warm-up Z-2.  Which asked students to substitute point values into the equations of lines.  If the point, substituted into the equation makes a true statement, that point would be on the line if it were graphed.  It is a solution to the function!
The lesson had students using the y-intercept as a starting point when graphing the line, and the slope as the directions to find the subsequent points.  Most of the students had fun with it!  Their homework is the 4 problems in the Guided Practice on page 110.  The assignment for Thursday will be to finish the lesson, WB pages 111-112.  They will have a vocabulary Quiz on Friday, on this quiz they will have to create a venn diagram illustrating the relationship between proportional and non-proportional linear relationships.
I hope this message finds everyone well.

Happy Tuesday!
I hope everyone had a great weekend!
Today in class students worked on a Breakout EDU activity. Here's a link to their welcome page if you're wondering about BreakoutEDU  https://www.breakoutedu.com/welcome.
The topic for the breakout is Scientific Notation and Exponent Rules, one team was really close to opening the box, if they had another 5 minutes in class I'm certain they would have succeeded!  Tomorrow students will have about 10 minutes to wrap up the Breakout, they will then work on their Module 3 Pretest, Proportional Relationships.
Module 3 vocabulary is due on Friday, Oct. 12.  Students should define the 10 terms from page 69 in their workbooks and give an example demonstrating each term.

Vocabulary is key to being successful in class, if students do not understand what is being asked, their chance of successfully answering the question is very small.  Please encourage students to complete this assignment fully.

Thursday in class students will be working on their vocabulary and the "Are you Ready" online assignment.
Friday we will begin direct instruction of Module 3, lesson 1, Representing Proportional Relationships Workbook pages 70 to 74.

Happy Friday!
Today is a PLC Friday, so class periods are shorter, but advisory is nearly an hour long!
Students are becoming masters of Scientific Notation!!!  Today's challenge is solving problems using operations with scientific notation.  In class we are going through some basic notes, and working the guided practice problems on the white board.
The Assignment is online at my.hrw.com: 2.4 Operations with Scientific Notation in their personal math trainer.
If students do not have access to internet or a computer at home, they should utilize their nearly hour long advisory today to finish the assignment.
Next week will be busy with field trips, the Module 2 Quiz (online), and the Unit 1 Review.
I am working on getting the Mod. 1 Quiz corrections graded, I appreciate your patience.

Assignment

We are continuing our study of Scientific Notation with Negative Exponents... students graded 2.3 Guided Practice #'s 1-15 today in class, then completed 16-34 in their workbooks.  If they didn't finish in class it's homework.  Class today was a work day.
I've been working on updating grades in Skyward.  So far I've entered the homework assignments, the vocabulary that's been turned in on paper, and have started grading the Quizlet vocabulary.  I'm working on grading the Quiz corrections, but they take a bit to go through.
Homework packets from last week were handed back.  Students that scored 70% or lower will need to do another practice page, Workbook pg. 36.  It is over the same standard as pg. 20 in the packet.
Just like you wouldn't show up to a basketball game, having only practiced free throws once, it is beneficial to keep practicing skills we haven't mastered yet :) The online assignments are open for additional practice, as is IXL.
Students will have a quiz over Scientific notation and exponent rules next week!  They're gaining confidence and doing a great job on the homework, so it should be a great boost for their grades!

Thank you for your continued support!

Happy Friday!
I hope everyone has had a great week and that you find the weekend restful!
Students do not have any new math assignments to complete over the weekend!
Quiz Corrections are due on the 18th, or one week after I hand back their tests (some students were absent and received their work at a later date).  The forms for the corrections were passed out in class, and are also available on the book shelf in the classroom, and in Google Classroom, and I'll attach the PDF here as well :)

Next week we will continue our work with Integer Exponents, Scientific Notation, and Operations with Scientific notation.  Work will be assigned from their workbooks and/or online.  Assignments are started in class, but may need to complete the assignment on their own whether in advisory or at home.

I hope you have a great weekend,

Happy Wednesday!
Today in class students graded their review quiz, and participated in Review stations based on their Review Quiz results.

QUIZ is tomorrow... really!  Students will not be allowed to use a calculator, as all of the assignments have been calculator free thus far, it follows what's been taught and expected for the Module.
Students have been using a perfect squares/ square roots chart.  Students will be allowed to use a perfect squares/square roots chart and cube/ cube roots chart on their Quiz tomorrow, they have to bring it with them.  It needs to be on a separate sheet of paper, not in their journals as this is not an open note Quiz.  The chart may be hand written or computer printed.

As always, if you have any questions please email me at [email protected]

I hope everyone has a great evening!

Assignment

Module 1 Quiz Review/Study Guide.
Students are to complete Workbook page 27, the "Ready to Go On" or practice Quiz.
I'm attaching the first 3 problems worked out, and the answer key... so you can guide them in checking their work and correcting things before they come to class for the Quiz.
The Quiz is tentatively set for tomorrow, Wednesday, depending on how the class goes I may bump it back to Thursday.
The Quiz has been printed!  Once students finish their quiz they will have two online assessment pieces to complete.  The Module 2 "Are You Ready" which assesses the skills needed to be successful in Module 2, and the Module 2 Pretest.
The Pretests are scored in a category of their own, it is weighted at 0%.  So any item in the Pretest (it's orange on my screen) it does not add into their grade.
I'll attach a picture for reference.
Please email if you have any questions or concerns.

Today students graded their work from Monday and Tuesday, took a quiz on the vocabulary terms, then started working on "Ordering Real Numbers".
Students worked on putting real numbers in order and approximating the value of irrational numbers to create inequality statements.
Students should complete the note section "Your Turn" problems on pages 21-23, questions 1-7.
Tomorrow we will continue to study how to approximate, relate, and use the approximations to solve equations.
WB pages 24-26 # 1-20 and a HOT question are due on Tuesday when we return from Labor Day.
I'll be out Thursday afternoon for an orthodontic appointment, please email me if you have any questions.

The online Personal Math Trainer assignment is also open and available for students for module 1.2 and 1.3.

Assignment

Happy Monday,
Today in class students participated in a class discussion on approximating irrational numbers, and on the relationship between the numbers within the set of real numbers.  Monday's assignment is to complete the "Your Turn" problems from WB pages 15-17, Tuesday we will work through more problems in class, with WB pages 18-20 Questions 1-25 plus one HOT question Due on Wednesday.
Progress reports will be hitting your inbox from Skyward soon.  I graded assignments that were turned by Friday and those are all entered in.  The warm-up in class was to check the grades in Skyward and reflect, plan, and do something to make it better.  Several students turned in work, but it will take some time to get them graded, please check Skyward tomorrow.

Assignment

Happy Saturday!
I hope everyone is having a great weekend.
I've attached pictures from this week's white boards.  Students were assigned Module 1 Vocabulary, it was due Friday 8-24-18, as well as Module 1 Lesson 1 work.  There were two options for online homework, or they could do the work book assignment.  I will be grading and updating grades on Sunday afternoon.
If students have not turned in their assignment they should have access to it online at my.hrw.com.
Per the syllabus, students have 1 day to complete completion work, and 1 week to complete their corrections.  Corrections must be done on notebook paper, students find their mistake, explain it, and correct it.  Students that do the corrections will receive full credit for the assignment.

I have attached our Month at a Glance, it is tentative.  As of today, I'm planning on giving students the Module 1 Quiz on September 5th, the module 2 Pre test on the 6th with vocabulary and prerequisite skills assignment on the 6th.

Assignment

Happy Monday!!!
Today students took the STAR Adaptive Math Assessment.  It's a really neat adaptive test, such that as students answer questions the testing platform chooses their next question based on the previous answers.  If they get part of the question correct, it will take that into consideration.  We utilize this testing platform to identify gaps in their math skills, then we use interventions throughout the school day to fill those gaps!  :)   If students did not finish this in class, they will have a chance to finish in advisory.
Students started the Beginning of the Year benchmark test in the GoMath online resource last week.  Students will have the opportunity to finish this task on Tuesday.

Module 1 Vocabulary is due on Friday, student have 14 terms to define from page 5 in their GoMath Workbooks, available online or their physical workbooks.  Terms may be defined in their Math Journals or they may create a Quizlet Study Set and share it with me at [email protected].
This week our goal is to complete the testing, and dig into Module 1 Real Numbers, the first homework assignment will be online at my.hrw.com.  It will be assigned as soon as we get the testing wrapped up.

I realize it seems like a lot of tests are given the first two weeks of school, and I would like to apologize, we are doing our best to identify the needs of each student whether it's gaps in math class, or a student that may need to be moved up to Algebra because they are already proficient in the 8th grade standards.  We try to gather as much information as we can as quickly as possible.  Please email me if you have any concerns.  Students will have the data to share as soon as we get the reports printed.

Thank you for your time,

Assignment

Students have a choice as to which homework assignment they complete.
The GoMath program has many options to meet the student's practice needs.
Students are not to use calculators for Module 1, they need to practice their multiplication and division skills.  (Last year I had a student answer, on a test, that the square root of 4 is 2546)... I wish it wasn't true, but it is... they rely on calculators and trust what ever it says on the screen instead of realizing it's not a reasonable answer.  Please encourage students to practice their math facts including perfect squares and cubes.  Notes have been added to their Google Classroom :)

I've assigned practice/homework three different ways, they may choose one.
-Work book pages 12-13 # 1-18, 20-26, 30, and one H.O.T. question.
-my.hrw.com -Rational and Irrational Number-homework
-my.hrw.com -Rational and Irrational Number Interactive Student Lesson.

All three options offer practice for the skills we're working on in class this week.

Module 1 Vocabulary is also due tomorrow, students define the 14 terms from page 5 and turn them in.

Assignment

Happy Friday!
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for coming to our Open House Thursday night!  It was nice to meet so many of you!
Students have been given a lot of information this week, textbooks, online resources, and many have taken multiple tests.
Today in math students took the Beginning of the Year test, it is not for a grade, it is given as a pretest for the whole year, a bench mark if you will.  So it isn't for a grade, no worries.
Monday students will be given the STAR math test which is an adaptive assessment of their mathematical skills.
Vocabulary for Module 1 was assigned today and is due on Friday, August 20.
Students are to define the 14 terms either in their Math Journals, or they may create a Quizlet study set.  Quizlet is an online study program that allows students to create and practice online flash cards.  Students that choose to create a Quizlet study set will need to share their study set with me through the share option in Quizlet.  Title study set with the class period, student name, and module number to receive credit (often times the Quizlet ID is not the student name and I don't know who sent me the document).
