8th Graders are reading a great nonfiction story called "The Funeral of A. Lincoln and the Manhunt for Jefferson Davis" in our literature book this week. 
Tuesday - Read story and find examples on SIFT chart: symbolism, imagery, figurative language, and tone/theme.
Wednesday - Reread story and answer questions along with comparison and contrast of the 2 men.
Friday - Unit 3 Vocab Quiz. They received the 20 words last Tuesday and have a quizlet to study.

Having finished a chapter on verbs last week, the 8th graders are starting a Collections Unit 3 Civil War stories this week.  All homework for the verb worksheets are in Skyward and students have been encouraged to do corrections on them when they scored poorly.
Today we're reading "...the Life of Frederick Douglass..." in the literature book and using the online textbook so we can annotate as we read. They have a worksheet with questions and a SIFT chart to complete as well.
They will have a short reading passage to close read as homework tomorrow after discussion. Wednesday and Thursday will be in-class work in the Close Reader workbook.

Parents,
We are going to start the novel Johnny Tremain this week in ELA 8! Today the students are building background on historical figures that took part in the American Revolution. The book has 12 chapters each with vocabulary and questions to guide their reading. Many other skills will be taught as well as a writing project and a test at the end.

Wednesday - Friday - Reading chapters 1 & 2 with guided reading questions.

There will be a total of three quizzes throughout the book: 20 words from every four chapters. This week we have words from 5 & 6 and on Friday I'll add vocab for 7 & 8 for a quiz right after Thanksgiving.

Monday - creating quizlet for the 20 words I wrote in red on the Ch 1-4 vocab documents which are shared on Google Classroom. 2) Assigned reading Unit 3, Ch 1-2.
Tuesday - Reading Unit 3, Ch 3-4 & Unit 4, Ch 1-2. (handing out the questions worksheet today)
Wednesday - Library Lesson
Thursday - Reading Unit 4, Ch 3-5; finish the Unit 3 & 4 questions worksheet.
Friday - Hand in questions; discuss; Vocab Quiz on Unit 1-4 words in red.
 
The chapters are called units on the worksheets since they are divided into subchapters which are called chapters on the worksheet.

Monday & Tuesday - Reading "The Outsider" in the paperback student supplemental book kept in the classroom. Finishing the signposts worksheet and doing a plot diagram on the story.
Wednesday - Vocab QUIZ on the list of words for the unit. Document is on the Google Classroom.
Thursday - TEST on the unit. 
Friday - "The Raven" poem by Poe; Library checkout time.
 
Next week, we will begin the Johnny Tremain novel.

Monday: Students received new vocab list of Greek/Latin word parts. They made a quizlet. We are working in the Close Reader book on a new information text selection.
Tuesday: Finish Close Reader info text and have collaborative discussions. Continue with the "Writing as a Process" interactive student lesson online with a partner.
Wednesday: Nonfiction Signposts lesson and worksheet with nonfiction elements to identify in the Close Reader selection.
Thursday: Compare/Contrast 2 selections from Unit 1. 
Friday: QUIZ on the Greek/Latin word parts given Monday.
