Course Description

Week of 9-13
The kids need to bring a tennis ball/bouncy ball by Friday. I also need them to bring about 20 pennies and 4 quarters. We can do science activities if they have their own materials. I will probably be asking them to bring additional materials as well and will try to keep it updated on here. 
 
November 9-Introduction to natural materials vs. synthetic materials
 
November 10-Webquest
 
November 11-Webquest-Will be grading the first two pages
 
November 12-Plastic to Starch Lab
 
November 13-New topic-we are starting forces and motion.
 
November 2nd-6th
Monday-Finish doodle notes on combustion and start balancing equations
 
Tuesday-Lab demo on combustion using candles, formation of a precipitate, and start reviewing for quiz
 
Wed-Kahoot and WhoDunnit Activity
 
Thurs-Quiz over solutions, mixtures, chemical and physical changes, and chemical reactions
 
Fri-Start discussion of synthetic materials such as plastics
 
October 26th-30th
Monday-Review of physical and chemical properties. 
 
Tuesday-Finish physical and chemical properties. Finished notes due Wednesday. Start evidence of chemical changes.
 
Wed-Exothermic and endothermic reactions.
 
Thurs-Doodle Notes Chemical Reaction
 
Fri-No school for students
 
 
 
 
October 13-October 16th
We are studying acids and bases this week. We did a lab experiment on Tuesday testing the acidity of different household items. 
 
Food Chemistry Project-Due October 20th
The kids have all of the instructions in their Google Classroom. They can use the recipe that I gave them or they can use a family recipe. After making the original recipe, they will change one ingredient and make it again. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
 
 
 
 
Wednesday-October 7th Homework
Students need to read pages 45-46 in book and take notes over properties of ionic and covalent bonds. They are doing this in a t-chart on a Google doc that was assigned in classroom. 
 
Week at a Glance-Oct 5th-9th
Monday-Build Models of atoms to find their oxidation number using beans and paper squares. Also, watch covalent bonding songs for notes on ionic and covalent bonding.
Homework-finish the chart we started in class on bonding information.
 
Tuesday-Ionic Bonding-use colored pieces of paper to model bonding from one atom to another.
 
Wed-Covalent Bonding including polarity.
 
Thurs-Properties of Compounds, ionic and covalent
 
Fri-Quiz over ionic and covalent bonds, intro acids and bases
 
 
 
Week at a Glance-September 28-October 1st
Monday, Sept 28th-The students will finish labeling the groups and periods of the periodic table. We started an Interactive Periodic Table in class.  Quiz Thursday on the periodic table, valence electrons, and both atom models. 
 
Tuesday, Sept. 29th-The students will learn about valence electrons, the Bohr's model, and the electron dot model. We will practice drawing the models in class.
 
Wednesday, Sept 30th-The students will review the chemical and physical properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. We will also review for the quiz on Thursday.
 
Thursday, Oct 1st-Quiz over Periodic Table and Bonding (Valence Electrons and Models)
 
Friday, Oct 2nd-Continue with bonding by looking at the types of bonds
 
 
Supply needed
If your child has scissors, colored pencils, and glue sticks at home that they can keep at school, please send them with them. Thanks.
